Firearm Safety Certificate Study Guide
California Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) Study Guide
- If you do not already have a California Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit, you will generally need to obtain a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) before purchasing most firearms in California.
- The Firearm Safety Certificate is earned by passing a short written test covering basic firearm safety and California firearm laws. Read each question carefully—the wording is important, and even a single word can change the correct answer.
- This is a study guide designed to help you prepare for the official FSC test. We recommend working through it online rather than downloading or printing it, as it is quite lengthy. Answer each question first, then review the explanation if you miss one. Taking the time to understand why an answer is correct will help you retain the information and be better prepared for the official test.
- When you feel confident with the material, you can take the official California Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) test at Smokin' Barrel Firearms. After successfully passing the test, you will receive your Firearm Safety Certificate, which is valid for five years, and you'll be ready to begin shopping for your new firearm.
What is the Process to Get My CCW?
- In California starting 1/2024 a 16 hour class for Initial CCWs and a 8 hour class for renewing a CCW are required. I am qualified for Tulare and Kings.
- You will need your California DL or ID. You must live in the County you are applying for the CCW in. The CCW is good for all of California. You will need 2 other forms of proof of residency, such as a Utility bill, Lease/Rental Agreement, Telephone Bill, or Tax Bill.
- You need 3 references, one that lives with you if applicable, that you have known for 2 years or more. Ask your references to fill out the form they receive from the Sheriff's Department and return it quickly, as this is one of the common reasons CCW applications are delayed.
- Fill out the online application with Sheriff's department for the County you live in. I recommend printing out your application if possible. Also sign up for text alerts during the application.
- Number of firearms allowed vary according to the agency. Tulare in unlimited, but encourages
- After you fill out the application you need to go to the Sherriff's Department for your live scan. Some departments will give you an appointment time. Tulare County allows you to walk in for the Live Scan.
- You will be notified via email and/or text alert when your application is approved. At this point your second payment is due. You will then go down and pick up your permit.

Required Pre-Class Training Videos
As part of your course with April Skye Defense Tactics, you are required to watch all of the videos linked to this page before attending class. These videos are considered part of your classroom instruction and are a required component of your training.
The videos cover important firearm safety, handling, and foundational topics that will prepare you for your in-person class.
Completing them in advance allows us to spend more time on discussion, practical application, and answering your questions during class.
Please watch every video in its entirety before your scheduled class. As you watch, feel free to take notes and write down any questions you may have. We'll be happy to answer them during class.

Requirements for the Live Fire Portion of Class
• Government-issued photo ID
• Firearm, ammunition, extra mags and holster (min of 100 rounds)
• Speed Loader
• Eye and ear protection
(electronic hearing protection is recommended)
• Closed-toe shoes
• High-neck or crew-neck shirt (please avoid low-cut tops)
• Hat with a brim (recommended)
• Sunscreen and weather-appropriate clothing
• Water and snacks
• Notebook and Pen
Firearms must be brought unloaded in a case, do not handle any firearms until instructed to.
