In California if you don't have a CCW you need a Firearm 

Safety Card.  This card is obtained by taken a short quiz.  Read the questions carefully when you take the quiz since some of the answers might change due to one word or the question being phrased a certain way.   The card is good for 5 years.  Read thru and answer the questions for practice.  You can take this test at Smokin' Barrel Firearm then start shopping right away for your new firearm! 

• In California starting 1/2024 a 16 hour class for Initial CCWs and a 8 hour class for renewing a CCW are required.  I am qualified for Tulare, Kings and Fresno.
• You can start the application without having a firearm for an initial, but some people prefer to have their class done and submit everything at one time.
• You will need your California DL or ID, if your current physical address is on the card you do not have to submit extra documentation to verify your address.  You must live in the County you are applying for the CCW in.  The CCW is good for all of California though.    If you do not have your current address or a po box is listed you will need 2 other forms of proof of residency, such as  a Utility bill, Lease/Rental Agreement, Telephone Bill, or Tax Bill).   
• You need 3 references that are not related to you, that you have known for 2 years or more will be needed.  Ask your references to fill out the form they receive and return it quickly, as this is one of the common reasons CCW applications are delayed. 
• Fill out the online application with Sheriffs department for the County you live in.  You can google it, then look for the CCW application area of the website or download the specific departments app..   I recommend printing out your application if possible.  Also sign up for text alerts during the application.
• Most agencies will allow you up to 10 firearms.
• After you fill out the application you need to go to the Sherriff's Department for your live scan.  Some departments will give you an appointment time.  Tulare County allows you to walk in for the Live Scan.
• You will be notified via email and/or text alert when your application is approved.  At this point your second payment is due.  You will then go down and pick up your permit.
